Hyundai is known for making great-looking good value cars, and now they’re taking the same approach with their SUVs. The new 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid is a breath of fresh air, as the latest model of one of its best-selling SUVs has seen some serious upgrades.
As part of Hyundai’s mission to be carbon neutral by 2045, the company produces hybrid versions of the car, with a few trim options to choose from. Tucson is in its fourth generation now, establishing itself as a reliable small SUV in many markets worldwide.
The 2022 model has cascading headlights, body creases, and a better interior than its predecessor. In addition, there are three powertrain options, including one conventional and two hybrids (normal hybrid and plug-in hybrid).
The 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid SUVs are powered by a 1.6L turbocharged GDI 4-cylinder hybrid engine. It’s a HITRAC all-wheel drive with a 6-speed shiftable automatic transmission, while the engine delivers 227 hp at 5,500 rpm.
It packs in only 2000 towing capacity. However, it has roomy cargo space with 38.8 cubic feet with rear seats up and 74.5 cubic feet with rear seats down.
The technology inside the car is impressive with an in-car entertainment system with Bose sound system. You also have several navigation menus to choose from with clear and easy-to-use maps. There’s also a wireless charging station.
All the standard convenience features of Tucson are present in these new hybrid models, such as adaptive cruise control, driver-assisted parking assist, heated steering wheel, interior air filtration, and keyless ignition.
The drive of the new Tucson is smooth and comfortable, thanks to crisp power steering and quality suspension. It glides over even bumpy roads, and the cabin is mostly noiseless. It can even handle sharp turns efficiently.
With many assisting features available in all trims, the drive is easy for both stop and go driving and highway driving. It can go from zero to 60 miles in nearly 8 seconds, which is strong acceleration for a small hybrid SUV. The six-speed automatic transmission delivers ample speed.
Overall, the drive of all three trims, even the plug-in variants, is pretty much the same. The only exception is the Limited trim has more advanced assisting features, especially for highway driving. The Highway Drive Assist is a combination of adaptive cruise control and lane centering.
While there are four trims for the gasoline engine, the hybrid Hyundai Tucson comes in three trims. These include Blue Hybrid, SEL Convenience Hybrid, and Limited Hybrid.
The Blue Hybrid trim of the new 2022 Hyundai Tucson is the basic trim of the SUV, comparable with the SEL trim with the gasoline engine. It has a combined fuel economy of 38 MPG, which is slightly higher than the more advanced two hybrid trims. In addition, there are five exterior color options to choose from.
Blind Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BSCAA) is one of its many safety features. Other standard safety features include traction control, child safety locks, electronic stability control, and lane-keeping assist.
It offers an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as an entry-level hybrid trim. In addition, there is a 4.2-inch display in the instrument cluster.
The upholstery of the seats is premium quality for a basic trim. The driver seat is six-way manually adjustable for maximum comfort.
The basic warranty of 5 years applies to all trims, including this Blue one.
Standout Features:
The SEL Convenience Trim has almost the same specs as the Blue hybrid option. In addition, it has the same engine, all-wheel drive, and basic safety features, which are standard in all hybrid models.
However, it also offers the latest plug-in engine option. The plug-in hybrid engine makes it closer to an electric car, which allows you to leverage more of the electric power for everyday drive and switch to gasoline for those adventure trips.
The plug-in hybrid powertrain uses a 13.8 kW hour battery that provides 33 miles range. The charging time is roughly two hours. The screen has an Eco Chart that shows the power consumption of the car, detailing the gas range and electric range.
This trim gives a combined MPG of 37 miles (city 37 and highway 36).
Unlike many other hybrid cars, the four-wheel-drive system is mechanical, so it’s not dependent on electric power only.
The interior of the trim features a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, which is more than double that on the Blue trim.
Standout Features:
The new Hyundai Tucson 2022 Hybrid Limited trim is the top-of-the-line, featureful trim of the SUV, adding more robust safety features. This trim is also available with the plug-in hybrid engine option, offering pretty much the same upgrade in terms of power and battery as the SEL Convenience trim.
The combined MPG is 35, whereas the electric range is 33 miles. The fuel capacity is lower than other trims coming in at a little over 11 gallons. That, of course, is balanced by the battery.
Its navigation screen is the biggest of the three trims, measuring 10.25 inches. It is also available in the same five color options as the other trims.
Standout Features:
The Hyundai Tucson 2022 Hybrid is not just aesthetically pleasing but also packs in impressive electric power, especially with the plug-in options available with the SEL Convenience and Limited trims. The differences between the trims are subtle.
All in all, the Tucson is a noticeable improvement, especially in terms of design, with a stellar-looking exterior.
